What is cystitis?

Cystitis is an infection of the bladder which causes a burning sensation when peeing. Urine is normally naturally sterile, but during pregnancy your urinary tract becomes relaxed and dilated, so the chances of bacteria getting up there increases, meaning you’re more likely to get cystitis.

What is cystitis?

  • Pain, burning or stinging whilst urinating
  • A frequent and urgent need to urinate but only passing small amounts

Try following these simple steps to help you prevent a bladder infection:

  • Urinate as soon as you can after a relation with your husband.
  • Don’t wait to go to the toilet if you can help it. Try and empty your bladder as much as possible when you do go.
  • Avoid long or frequent baths and avoid using perfumed or antiseptic products.
  • Wear cotton undergarments and avoid tights or close-fitting jeans and trousers.
  • Drink plenty of water.

Once diagnosed, cystitis can usually be treated safely during pregnancy with a short course of antibiotics, but always consult your doctor. While you’re suffering, drink plenty of water. Drinking cranberry juice is also said to help relieve symptoms.
