Carrot Potato Mash

Carrot Potato Mash is a great way to introduce vegetables for your little one! Potato can be cooked and puréed easily, providing vitamins and minerals essential for your baby’s development while carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which turns to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A helps your baby’s developing eyesight.

Ingredients

  • 1 small (50 grams) carrot, peeled
  • 1 small (80 grams) potato, peeled
  • ¾ cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon of ghee

Method

  1. Place the carrot and potato in a small pressure cooker along with water and pressure-cook for 2 whistles.
  2. Open the lid when the pressure is completely released.
  3. Pass the potato and carrot through fine sieve.
  4. Cook for 2-3 minutes on low heat.
  5. Add ghee and mix well. Serve immediately
Broccoli Butternut Potato Cheese

Broccoli is rich in antioxidants and fibre, which keep your child healthy and strong. This creamy disguise of cheese and milk will make any growing infant happy to eat all his/her vegetables!

Broccoli Butternut Potato Cheese

Ingredients

  • 200 grams potato
  • 250 grams butternut squash
  • 150 grams broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon plain flour
  • 2 teaspoon full fat spread, e.g. olive or sunflower spread
  • 150ml fresh cow’s milk
  • 10 grams fresh Parmesan, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon ricotta cheese

Method

  1. Peel and chop potato and butternut squash, and boil for 8-10 minutes.
  2. Wash broccoli florets and steam for 8-10 minutes until they are soft when pierced with a knife. Allow to cool slightly.
  3. Meanwhile, mix the flour, full fat spread and milk in your food processor or in a container with a hand blender.
  4. Pour into a microwaveable container and cook for 45 seconds at full power. Remove and stir.
  5. Microwave for another 15-30 seconds until the cheese sauce is thickened. Stir in grated Parmesan cheese and ricotta a cheese. Then let it rest to cool slightly.
  6. Spoon cheese sauce over broccoli, with potato and butternut squash, mixed to a texture appropriate for your baby.
Rice Vermicelli Upma

Rice vermicelli is a great introduction to carbohydrates. You can cut up the vermicelli to make it more appetizing for your toddler!

Ingredients

  • ½ cup rice vermicelli
  • ½ teaspoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon skinless split black gram
  • 1 curry leaf, chopped
  • ½ medium tomato blended or pulp without seeds
  • 1 cup of hot water

Method

  1. Dry roast the rice vermicelli in a non-stick pan till brown. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
  2. Head the oil in the same pan. Add the black gram and curry leaves.
  3. Add in the tomato and sauté for half a minute. Then cook the mixture for another 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add roasted vermicelli and mix well. Add one cup of hot water.
  5. Mix well, cover and cook until the vermicelli is turns soft.
  6. Remove curry leaves.
  7. Serve at room temperature.
Avocado Hummus with Pita or Chapatti

Avocado Hummus is a tasty and nutritious dish for your little one! The earthy taste of chickpeas and the strong flavours of cumin and garlic should tickle your toddler’s taste buds while a small slice of warm pita bread should give his tiny teethes a few moments of rest!

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 400 grams chickpeas
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 lemon, juice only
  • ½ tablespoon ground cumin
  • Pita bread or chapatti, to serve

Method

  1. Cut the avocado in half, skin and remove the seed.
  2. Drain and rinse the chickpeas.
  3. Blend the avocado, chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and cumin in a food processor until smooth.
  4. Transfer the avocado hummus to a bowl and cover with cling film. Chill in the fridge for one hour.
  5. Serve in bowls with warm pita bread.
Aloo and Broccoli Paratha

Similar to the Potato and Carrot Paratha, this version consists of a chunkier filling made with broccoli for your toddler, as he grows older. This green superfood is rich in iron and is a great way to prevent your toddler from developing iron deficiency anemia.

Ingredients

  • 45 grams whole wheat flour
  • ½ small potato, boiled, peeled and grated
  • 2 broccoli florets, blanched and finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried mango powder
  • 1 teaspoon homemade white butter/ghee

Method

  1. Put the wheat flour in a bowl, slowly add water and knead until it turns into soft dough.
  2. For stuffing, mix the potato, broccoli, cumin powder and dried mango powder in a bowl.
  3. Divide the dough and the stuffing into two equal portions.
  4. Roll out the dough into thick chapatti and stuff each with a portion of stuffing. Seal the edges and roll into thin paratha.
  5. On a heated non-stick tawa, place the paratha on one side for a few seconds then add half a teaspoon of ghee or white butter before it turns brown. Do the same for the other side.
  6. Serve at room temperature.
Dalia with Carrots and Peas

Introduce your toddler to semi-solid foods with dalia. The grains of broken wheat are highly absorbent and quickly plump up when water is added, while holding all the flavours of the vegetables sauteed in white butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon homemade white butter
  • 1 tablespoon boiled and grated carrot
  • 1 teaspoon shelled green peas, boiled and mashed
  • 3 tablespoons broken wheat (dalia), soaked in 1 cup of water until soft then drained
  • 1/8 teaspoon cumin powder

Method

  1. Warm white butter in a non-stick pan, add carrot and green peas then sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  2. Add dalia and sauté, stirring continuously for about 6-7 minutes or until brown. Add one cup of water and mix well.
  3. Add cumin powder and mix. Cover and cook till the broken wheat is soft to touch.
  4. Serve at room temperature.
Sweet Potato and Lemon Chicken Bake

An updated version of a regular chicken mash is the Sweet Potato and Lemon Chicken Bake. Marinating chicken in zest and lemon juice ensures the chicken is tender and helps infuse a refreshing hint of citrus!

Sweet Potato and Lemon Chicken Bake

Ingredients

  • 1 lemon
  • 100 grams chicken breast
  • 1 large sweet potato (150g)
  • ½ tablespoon crème fraîche
  • ½ teaspoon rapeseed oil
  • 1 medium-sized orange pepper, de-seeded and sliced

Method

  1. Zest the lemon, making sure you don’t grate off the white portions as it will make it taste bitter. Squeeze the lemon juice into a bowl. Pre-heat oven to 200°C.
  2. Cut the chicken breast into small pieces and marinate in lemon juice and half of the zest.
  3. Peel the sweet potato and cut into small pieces. Steam until soft.
  4. Heat rapeseed oil on medium heat and add the lemon chicken, stirring until it starts to brown. Next add the orange pepper and stir for 3 minutes.
  5. In an ovenproof dish, place sweet potato cubes, lemon chicken and pepper in with crème fraîche. Place dish on the middle shelf in the oven and bake for 5 minutes.
  6. When done, remove from the oven and cool to room temperature.
Potato and Carrot Paratha

Crunchy and savoury, this day snack will satisfy your child’s munchies. The chewy parantha offers a new texture for your little one to discover and holds a creamy mash of carrots and potatoes. It’s a delicious meal he’ll find hard to resist too!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons whole wheat flour
  • 1 tablespoon potatoes, boiled, peeled and mashed
  • 1 ½ tablespoons carrots, boiled and mashed
  • A pinch of coriander powder
  • A pinch of cumin powder
  • A pinch of dried mango powder
  • 1 teaspoon ghee

Method

  1. Mix wheat flour in a bowl. Slowly add water while knead the flour until it turns into soft dough.
  2. In a bowl, make the stuffing by mixing potato, carrot, cumin powder, coriander powder and dried mango powder.
  3. Divide both the dough and stuffing into two equal portions.
  4. Roll out the dough into thick chapatti layers and stuff each of them with a portion of the studding. Seal the edges and roll into thin paratha.
  5. On a heated non-stick tawa, place the paratha on one side for a few seconds then add half a teaspoon of ghee before it turns brown. Do the same for the other side.
  6. Serve at room temperature.
Beef with Vegetables

As your toddler grows older, you can introduce red meat to his diet. Our version of beef stew is slightly pared down with manageable mouthfuls of minced meat instead.

Ingredients

  • 100 grams potato
  • 100 grams sweet potato
  • 100 grams carrot
  • ½ small onion
  • 50 grams lean beef mince
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Method

  1. Peel and chop potato, sweet potato and carrot.
  2. Add to a pan of boiling water and cook for 15 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, peel and chop the onion.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a saucepan, and then add the onion. Sauté for a few minutes until the onions turn brown.
  5. Turn down the heat and add beef mince. Continue to sauté on low heat, breaking up the mince with a spoon as it browns.
  6. Drain the potatoes, sweet potato and carrot then stir into beef and onion.
  7. When all is mixed in well, break up the vegetables with a wooden spoon or fork until appropriate texture is achieved for your baby.
Fruity Yoghurt Swirl

Fruity Yoghurt Swirl –a variety of fruits with a teaspoon of natural yoghurt can make a delicious healthy snack for your little one! Fruits contain a variety of vitamins, such as vitamin C, which helps your baby’s body absorb iron.

Ingredients

  • 1 apple
  • 1 banana
  • A dash of lemon juice
  • Approx. 100ml unsweetened grape juice
  • Bebelac Cereal – My First Rice
  • 2 tablespoons natural yogurt
  • Water for cooking

Method

  1. Peel, core and chop the apple into cubes.
  2. Place apple cubes in a pan and cover with water. Simmer for 6-7 minutes on a medium heat with the lid on.
  3. Chop and mash the banana with a dash of lemon juice.
  4. To the drained apple cubes and banana purée, stir in unsweetened grape juice and Bebelac Cereal – My First Rice, to achieve a smooth paste-like consistency.
  5. Let it cool and mix together with natural yogurt to taste.
Creamy Chicken with Vegetables

Chicken is a great source of protein for your baby! The introduction of high-protein food into his diet can boost cell development, tissues and organs. Mixed in with high-energy vegetables such as potatoes and squash, Creamy Chicken with Vegetables is great for his growth and development.

Creamy Chicken with Vegetables

Ingredients

  • 1 skinned chicken breast (125g)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • ½ butternut squash (prepared weight approx. 350 grams)
  • 2 medium-sized carrots (prepared weight approx. 200 grams)
  • 1 medium-sized potato (prepared weight approx. 200 grams)
  • 300ml boiling water
  • 142ml single cream

Method

  1. Cut the chicken breast into strips and stir-fry in a large pan with vegetable oil until the meat turns brown.
  2. Peel and chop the carrots, potato and squash, removing the seeds, and add to the pan. Place the lid on and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour in boiling water, stir well and bring mixture to a boil. Cover with the pan lid and simmer for 30-40 minutes (or until all the vegetables are softened), stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and let the vegetables cool for a few minutes. Gently mash until desired consistency.
  5. Pour in cream and blend well.
Boiled Vegetables

Boiled vegetables is a great way to introduce a variety of vegetables for your little one! Boiled to the right softness, small cubes of vegetables allow your baby to discover the textures and sensations of semi-solid food!

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ghee
  • 30 grams carrot, peeled and cut into ½ cm cubes
  • 50 grams potato, peeled and cut into ½ cm cubes
  • 20 grams red pumpkin, peeled and cut into ½ cm cubes
  • ¼ teaspoon cumin powder
  • A pinch of turmeric powder

Method

  1. Heat the ghee in a non-stick pan, add carrot, potato and red pumpkin and mix well.
  2. Add cumin powder and turmeric powder then stir to mix.
  3. Cover the pan and cook on low heat till the vegetables turn soft. Sprinkle water if necessary.
  4. Serve at room temperature.
Lemon and Herb Chicken Medallion

Spice up regular chicken cubes by marinating them in lemon zest and juice, infused with herbs such as parsley and sage. The fruits’ natural acidity softens the chicken so your baby can easily chew them. Top it off with a drizzle of creme fraiche for that tasty kick.

  • 4 small new potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 150 grams green beans
  • 1 dessert spoon crème fraîche

Method

  1. Finely grate the lemon, and put a full tablespoon of lemon zest in a bowl with vegetable oil, the juice from the same lemon, parsley, sage and garlic.
  2. Put the chicken medallion into the bowl and mix it with the lemon marinade.
  3. Cook new potatoes in boiling water for 20 minutes.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a pan, add the chicken and marinade juice. Cook gently for 6 minutes on each side.
  5. Cook green beans in boiling water for 5-6 minutes. When done, remove from hot water and drain.
  6. Cut the chicken medallions into small chunks, serve with a side of green beans and a lovely drizzle of crème fraîche.

Semolina made from durum wheat gives your baby the energy he/she needs to play, explore and discover the world around him/her as the body breaks it down slowly. Plus, adding a pinch of assafoetida helps relieve bloating so your child will be ready for nap time.

Method

  1. Heat the ghee in a non-stick pan, add the asafoetida, onion and tomato and cook on medium heat for 5-6 minutes.
  2. Add semolina, mashed peas, cumin powder, sugar and hot water and mix well.
  3. Cover and cook for 5-6 minutes.
  4. Serve at room temperature.
Chicken Flower Dumplings

These furry looking Chicken Flower Dumplings are a fun way to introduce minced chicken to your toddler. Each dumpling contains the nutritional values of carrots, beansprouts, spinach and ginger.

Ingredients

  • ½ banana leaf
  • 75 grams chicken, minced
  • 1 tablespoon grated carrot
  • 1 tablespoon beansprout, chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon ginger paste
  • 3 tablespoons rice, soaked
  • 1 tablespoon shredded spinach

Method

  1. Heat sufficient water in a steamer. Line the perforated steamer container with the banana leaf.
  2. In a bowl, mix minced chicken with carrot, spinach, bean sprouts, ginger paste.
  3. Spread the rice evenly on a plate.
  4. Grease your palms then take small portions of the chicken mixture and shape them into balls. Roll the chicken balls on the plate of rice, making sure each is evenly covered. Place these balls on the banana leaf in the steamer. Repeat this for the rest of the minced chicken.
  5. Close the lid and steam for about 15 minutes on medium heat.
  6. Serve at room temperature.
Roasted Rice and Moong Dal Porridge

Roasted Rice and Moong Dal Porridge is a great way to continue introducing solid foods to your baby. Green beans are rich in protein and vitamins A, B-6 and C that support your child’s physical and cognitive development.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown rice, washed
  • ½ cup split skinless green gram (moong dal), washed
  • ½ teaspoon ghee
  • 2 teaspoons finely grated carrot

Method

  1. Spread the brown rice and moong dal over a muslin cloth and dry under sun for two days.
  2. Warm a non-stick pan and dry roast the mixture on medium heat for 10 to 12 minutes.
  3. Cool and grind into a coarse powder. Store in an airtight container.
  4. In a pan, add one tablespoon of the ground brown rice and moong dal mixture and sauté for a minute.
  5. Add one cup of water and grated carrots. Cook on low heat for 10 minutes or until the rice is cooked. Mix well.
  6. Serve.
Fresh Paneer, Corn and Pea Bhurji

A toddler’s digestive system isn’t developed enough to breakdown milk but paneer is safe to eat as it is lactose-free. The warm fragrance of cumin and naturally sweet corn kernels go well with the soft pillows of paneer, whereas hints of coriander could be a unique taste your toddler might come to love.

  • 200ml fresh cow’s milk
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 2 tablespoons green peas, boiled and crushed
  • 1 tablespoon fresh coriander, chopped

Method

  1. To make the Paneer, heat fresh cow’s milk in a deep non-stick pan till it begins to boil. Add in lemon juice and stir till the milk curdles. Strain the Paneer through a muslin cloth and dip in chilled water immediately.
  2. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan and add the cumin seeds. Once they begin to change colour, add the Paneer and mix.
  3. Add the sweet corn kernels, green peas and mix well.
  4. Cook for 2-3 minutes on low heat. Add chopped coriander and mix.
  5. Serve at room temperature.
